Financial Support

There are several funding sources available to assist adults with their learning. These funding sources are in addition to the help certain clients will get with course fees.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)

The Adult Learning Grant is designed to assist adults who want to get back into education to study full-time for their first level 2 or level 3 qualification. To apply for the ALG you must be:

  • Aged 19 +
  • Studying in this academic year
  • Studying full-time, which means 12 guided learning hours per week, 150 guided learning hours per term, or 450 guided learning hours per academic year
  • Studying for your first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification
  • Full level 2 qualification = 5 x GCSE grade A* - C or NVQ 2 or equivalent
  • Full level 3 qualification = 2 A levels or NVQ 3 or equivalent
  • UK resident; this includes if you have settled status in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in England for the three years before your course starts. (Refugees and Asylum seekers please speak to one of our advisors)
  • Income less than £19,513 or a joint income of £30,810 if you’re married or live with a partner
  • Supporting your studies yourself

Please note that you cannot apply for ALG if you are in receipt of the following:

  • Support from other government grants such as EMA, New Deal or Apprenticeship
  • Out of work benefits, such as Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support or Incapacity Benefit

Care to Learn

If you are under 20 and have one or more children and want to return to education, Care to Learn can help pay for childcare and travel costs while you study.

 

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

If you are in full time study and are 16 – 19 and your parents earn less than £30,810 you might be eligible for the EMA which is up to £30 a week to assist you in your studies.
